A char in C is already a number (the character's ASCII code), no conversion required. If you want to convert a digit to the corresponding character, you can simply add '0': c = i +'0'

I am trying to make a program that reads a string from a file in SPIFFS with 4 tab-separated things and then processes it into four char arrays to be used in another function. However, I get the error cannot convert 'char*' to 'char**' in assignment.

The variable name is an array of arrays of char, i.e. it's an array of strings. The search function doesn't accept an array of strings as its first argument, just a single string (pointer to char). At least that's how you declared the search function.
