Если честно я не понял почему у меня раньше работало с char? Какая то мистика, хотя вроде все понятно: в типе char - 1 символ = 1 байт, а у меня кодировка UTF-8 1 символ = 4 байта и по другому быть не может, но у меня ведь работало!!!
